Prenatal Care & Women's Health

Our office is prepared to assist with many aspects of maternity care. Women often have structural problems such as low back pain and sciatica, rib pressure and upper back tension, neck pain, headaches and carpal tunnel symptoms. Chiropractic care is often used throughout the pregnancy as a woman’s body changes. We are equipped with a table to accommodate the growing belly and are trained in special prenatal techniques. The doctors are certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in the Webster Technique of pelvic balance that can assist with breech position. In addition, acupuncture services are available and often used to help with morning sickness, structural problems, breech position and post due-date labor stimulation. It is always exciting to follow a woman through this wonderful time and then meet the baby on her post-partum check up.

Women can seek help throughout life for hormone related issues, such as menstrual migraines and tension headaches, irregular cycles, hot flashes, sleep problems and back pain. Various approaches can be explored including chiropractic care, acupuncture, diet and nutrition evaluation and possible food sensitivities.

Pediatric Care

Birth can sometimes be a stressful event with occasional pressures to the baby’s head, shoulders or hips. We often check newborns with gentle touch to make sure they have entered the world aligned and ready to grow into happy, healthy babies. Proper neck and cranial motion can help prevent the tendency for congestion and ear infection as they teethe and meet new germs in the world. And of course, all growing children experience topples, bumps and falls. Chiropractic care can help smooth out any misalignments before they become injury patterns. As a child grows from infancy to teens years, it can be helpful to have periodic check-ups to keep the spine aligned and thus the nervous system as healthy as possible. The teen years are then a very important time in chiropractic care to monitor for scoliosis, treat sports injury and keep an eye on posture and growth patterns.

Jaw (TMJ)

Many people have obvious problems with their jaw including pain, popping, clenching, grinding, abnormal tooth wear and even having the jaw get stuck in the open or closed position. There can be other problems associated with the jaw such as tingling or shooting pain in the face, headaches and head tenderness, vertigo or dizziness, facial tics and eye twitching, neck and upper back tension, ear pain or muffled hearing. The doctors at our office are qualified to evaluate the mechanics of the jaw joint as well as cranial sutures and work with uncomplicated TMD or temporomandibular dysfunction. If the case is more complex, they also work closely with some of the area dentists and with noted Harrisonburg TMD specialist, Brian Reichgotte, D.D.S. Often a combined approach is utilized with a specific dental bite guard or orthotic treatment plan and chiropractic support of the spine and cranium. Patients often find the jaw pain subsides and other problems do as well.

NAET (Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique)

NAET is an innovative approach for identifying and then desensitizing the body to environmental and/or food allergens. It is completely natural, painless and non-invasive. NAET is a combination of various health care disciplines, including chiropractic, acupuncture, kinesiology and nutrition. Homeopathic test bottles are used to check for the substances the body does not tolerate such as dairy, wheat, nuts, pollens, molds and perfume. A series of acupressure points are massaged to help the body ignore the old sensitive response and create a new healthy reaction. There is no direct exposure to an allergen so the technique is very safe and can be used with children and adults. Both doctors had the opportunity to study with the founder of NAET, Dr. Devi Nambudripad, MD, DC, LAc., PhD.

NAET is not covered by insurance.

Energetic Healing

Energy work became popular in the 1970’s with the introduction of Therapeutic Touch and Reiki. Many nurses, massage therapists and lay people learned this technique to help patients, friends and family heal more quickly. Charlsie Baer had trained in these techniques then discovered and studied an innovative new system known as Energetic Healing. Energetic Healing is a scientifically measured form of healing. Our world is made up of energy and our bodies, although physical, also have an magnetic or memory field. In a session, the therapist “looks” for imbalances in and around the physical body. There may be patterns and symbols that are part of the reason for health issues. The goal of the session is to raise awareness of how this energy is stored or blocked, creating a new sense of balance or flow for the person.

The therapist is trained to sense these energy fields, using intuition and muscle tests to find the imbalances. There are seven major information centers or chakras that are located along the spine and are responsible for sending and receiving information. For example, many people have experienced a ‘gut feeling’ which is a part of the 3rd chakra. Each chakra has its focus and perhaps the most well known is the 4th or the heart chakra where we feel love and develop compassion. Another chakra is the 5th where we can give voice to our thoughts, memories and emotions. Energetic Healing helps restore the balance and connections between these chakras and thus facilitates the balance and healing of the mind, body, spirit.

In some occasions, the person had been suffering with symptoms for years and after one Energetic Healing session, they were relieved of pain and aggravating symptoms. It is often commented that one session compares to “years in therapy, A very common complaint is that the person is not feeling themselves since a car accident, surgery or a traumatic event and after the session they felt “back in their body” and like themselves again. Often other forms of therapy could not help but problems were answered or insights gained during this relaxing, above the body form of healing work.

ionCleanse

Charlsie Baer was certified in 2008 as an ionCleanse practitioner. She feels that cleansing is basic self-care in this industrial world. Much of the dis-ease we have in our body can be related to toxicity. Headaches, joint pain, chronic fatigue, muscle aches and skin disorders are some of the ways toxins can affect us. It’s a great way to clear our systems from chemical or heavy metal exposure, tobacco residuals and side-effects from medication or chemotherapy.

The cleanse is very simple to do. Sitting in a comfortable chair, your feet are immersed in warm water with sea salt, the device is placed in the water and the machine is programmed. After a minute, you can observe the toxins coming out of your feet according to the colors in the water. The colors indicate purifying the liver, kidneys, bladder, urinary tract, male/female organs, gall bladder, joints, lymphatics or heavy metal release. Afterward you may feel lighter and have a greater feeling of wellbeing; many people say they slept better after having an ionCleanse. The feeling that you get after an ionCleanse is like the feeling that you get breathing in the negative ions created by the surf at the beach. Each time that you come, the more results you will see.

The ionCleanse is a very safe, fast way to detoxify the body. It is used around the world in offices of medical and naturopathic doctors, holistic practitioners, chiropractors and massage therapists. Most sessions are 30 minutes long except for children. The A Major Difference company recommends a series of 12-14 visits, take 2-3 weeks off to determine if your symptoms return, and if so, continue with the sessions or go on a monthly maintenance plan. There are packages available in a series of 4 and 8.
